Range & Foundry Co Birmingham Ludlow front. Extremely rare item as only a handful known to exist. Made around 1890 for Sub Post offices. Unusual in that the frame has been cast as one, unlike the later ludlows which were made from cast, plate and wood. Due to the solid casting these were expensive relative to the Ludlows provided by James Ludlow. As the Post Masters at this time had to pay for the posting boxes themselves, the cheaper James Ludlow boxes became the favoured option. The aperture is 8″ wide by 2″ high. The hood is 9 7/8 long. Has the original Victorian enamel plate surrounding the aperture. The last line would have ended with the word “eightpence” which has been scraped off as the price was later reduced to sixpence. The words “Letter Box” has been vandalised by scratching away the centre of each word. This was probably the result of a child as the top lettering is undamaged. The collection plate is accessed from the inside by removing four screws. The collection plate is not original to this front. I have full details of the items location, including street name and photos of the brickwork after removal showing where box had been installed. No lock & keys provided but can be arranged at extra cost if required. Range & Foundry Co Birmingham. In near perfect condition condition but for missing lug on bottom back of frame which would have attached to the wooden fame. No cracks or repairs. The wooden frame is not original as added to allow the front to be displayed. Please see my other listings. Cash on collection only please due to size and weight.
